What is Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses acoustic waves to treat various musculoskeletal conditions and promote healing. This therapy is commonly used to address chronic pain mainly affecting tendons and ligaments.
Shockwave Therapy works by generating high-energy acoustic waves, which are transmitted through a medium (usually a gel) applied to the skin to ensure efficient transmission.
These waves are focused on the injured or painful area to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. The shockwaves enhance blood circulation in the treated area, promoting tissue repair and regeneration and stimulate the production of collagen and other essential proteins involved in tissue healing. The therapy can reduce pain by decreasing nerve sensitivity and interrupting pain signals.
Some treatments which benefit from using this method are:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinitis
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
- Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
- Shoulder tendinopathy
- Calcific tendinitis
- Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)
