What is Prolotherapy Injections

Prolotherapy consists of a series of dextrose injections. Prolotherapy is mainly performed on chronic and weakened tissue such tendons and ligaments where the natural healing or support mechanisms are inadequate. Joint instability can also respond well to prolotherapy by strengthening the surrounding soft tissues thus reducing the micro shear effects on the underlying joint. Dextrose can be injected into various tissues, such as spinal ligaments, knee tendons and ligaments, ankle ligaments and the common flexor and extensor tendons affected in tennis and golfer’s elbow. The treatment helps strengthen connective tissue and increases collagen. The increase in tensile strength results in more stable and less painful tissue or joint. For those who respond well to the technique, there is usually a period of significantly reduced pain and a rare recurrence of symptoms.

Some treatments which benefit from using this method are:

  • Joint instability
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Ligament tears (especially surrounding the ankle and knee)
  • Chronic un-healed ligaments
  • Worn chronic tendons
